WALTON COUNTY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - Inlet Beach is one step closer to getting an underpass at a busy intersection.

According to Florida Department of Transportation Spokesperson Ian Satter, a multi-million dollar project that would create an underpass at the intersection of Highway 98 and 30A is now in the design phase.

The planning and design are estimated to take about 12 to 18 months and there isn't a set date for construction to begin just yet.

"We don't have plans right now for the right-of-way or construction because we are so early on in the design process. This project was actually appropriated by the state legislature this year, about $2 million so, there's funding available at this point for the design, but we'll have to look at different funding sources for right-of-way and construction as that nears over the next couple of years," FDOT Spokesperson Ian Satter said.

The project is set to increase safety for pedestrians.
