The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said last year nearly 11,000 people were killed in drunk driving crashes, more than 200 of those were between Christmas and New Year’s.

Florida Highway Patrol says it's important to make a plan ahead of time.

"Don't wait until the last minute, because that's where people get themselves into trouble," said Robert Cannon, Public Affairs Officer for the Florida Highway Patrol.

Ridesharing apps like Uber and Lyft are common ways to avoid drinking and driving, but one local company says they provide an even safer option.

GoVetted founder and CEO John Finch said their drivers are the most heavily vetted drivers of any ride-sharing service.

"Not only local, but state and federal background check, and they've gone through drug screening," said Finch.

He also said ridesharing is a great way to not only avoid endangering yourself and others on the road but also avoid parking problems.

"The driver is there in 15 or 20 minutes, New Year's will be a busy time, so a lot of people are coming in advance," Finch said.

AAA is also offering its free tow-to-go service again this year, where they will come to tow your car and provide you with a safe ride home.
