WESTVILLE, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - A Westville man is facing charges after deputies say he got into a fight with a deputy.
Holmes County Sheriff's Deputies say Friday Leonard Phillips, 59, was pulled over in the area of Highway 2 and Mt. Ida Road. Phillips was driving an ATV.
Deputies say Phillips grabbed a backpack from the ATV and took off running. A deputy had to chase him down. They say Phillips hit the deputy in the chest and face, taking his department-issued radio from his belt, and knocked the camera from his body.
They say when another deputy arrived, Phillips was still resisting officers. They say they had to use pepper spray to subdue him.
Deputies say when they searched his backpack and the surrounding area, they found digital scales, an eyeglass case which held a crystal-like substance suspected to be methamphetamine, and a glass pipe that tested positive for meth. They also say the backpack also held a container with an unknown substance and another that contained a small amount marijuana.
Phillips is charged with battery on a law enforcement officer, possession of meth, resisting an officer with violence, depriving a law enforcement officer of means of protection of communication, possession of marijuana less than 20 grams, and possession of drug paraphernalia.
