Man sentenced to close to 4 years in prison for human smuggling

OKALOOSA COUNTY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - A human smuggler from Honduras that was arrested in Okaloosa County has been sentences to close to 4 years in prison.

Deputies say Edwin Tercero along with five over occupants were pulled over on Interstate 10 in February 2019 during Operation Stonegarden, an operation to enhance border security.

Deputies say they found that all six occupants in the car were in the country illegally, and Tercero was arrested previously in May 2018 in Gulfport, Mississippi on suspicion of alien smuggling and illegal activity.

Deputies say he escaped after assaulting the Border Patrol officer.

Tercero was sentenced to two years for the 2018 case and almost four years will be served after.
