PANAMA CITY BEACH, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - According to the Panama City Beach Police Department, they responded to a report of a distressed swimmer in the Gulf of Mexico Saturday in the area of the Russel-Fields Pier (City Pier) in Panama City Beach.

They say responding officers found Richard Redman, 48, of Vernon unresponsive on the shore line.

They say witnesses stated Redman was attempting to help another swimmer that was in distress. Officials say Redman was observed struggling in the water and was pulled to shore by other swimmers using surf boards.

Police say the other swimmer made it back to shore safely.

They say once on shore, Redman was unconscious and CPR was initiated.

Medical services responded and took over life saving measures. Redman was transported to local hospital by ambulance.

Officers say Redman passed away shortly after.

At the time, double red flags were flying.
