PANAMA CITY BEACH, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - Mandatory trash pick up may be on the way for panama city beach residents.
At Thursday's Panama City Beach City council meeting, the council voted to move forward with mandatory trash pick up for residential areas in Panama City Beach.
The old ordinance states that residents only have to have a trash receptacle but doesn't say anything about it being picked up.
City officials say they want to provide some clarity and help clean up the streets.
Panama City Beach Mayor Mike Thomas said, "We don't have garbage pickup that's mandatory. We have a large tourist economy and a lot of them, the rental houses don't have it. People come down and think they've got it and leave it and put it in other people's things. It's created a problem."
City officials say if residents have a trash service they already use, they will be allowed to keep using them and will not mandate prices if the ordinance is passed.
