Medical experts agree that breast milk is best for mom and baby, but the process can sometimes be difficult for new moms. Gulf Coast Regional Medical Center Lactation Consultants help new moms navigate the process.
They say these moms need support from family members and the community as a whole because when moms feel supported, the success rate is increased. The benefits of breastfeeding extend beyond just growth and development for the baby.
"It helps prevent things as simple as common colds, respiratory issues for baby. It's really easy on their tummy, so they have a lot less tummy issues. Moms, breast milk that she makes is perfect for her baby," explains Lactation Consultant Bethany Clark.
New moms can get breastfeeding support 24 hours a day, seven days a week by calling the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) Loving Support Hotline at (850) 747-5775.
