Medical Monday: Woman diagnosed with breast cancer during pregnancy

PANAMA CITY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - Hayley Gunter is only 36 years old. She was diagnosed with breast cancer while she was 7 months pregnant with her daughter, Luna.

"I was just in shock," Gunter said. Her breast cancer was stage three invasive ductal carcinoma.

Medical Oncologist Dr. Andrew Weber said, "The longer you wait, the more likely you are to have metastatic disease." That's why Gunter was cleared to begin treatment during her pregnancy.

Two weeks after her diagnosis, Gunter had a mastectomy.

"In the operating room, there were doctors for me and then there was a specific set of doctors and nurses for her. We were prepared in case I need to have a c-section, but she did fine," Gunter explained.

Luna was born three and a half weeks after the mastectomy. Three weeks after that, Gunter began chemotherapy.

Dr. Weber said, "She handled it better than I can imagine anyone handling it. She's a really good testament for other women, a good role model."

Luna is now two years old. Gunter has completed all of her treatments and is happy to be a breast cancer survivor.
