Soon Mexico Beach will have a new grocery store. City leaders approved a development order Tuesday during their City Council meeting, to open a grocery store on 15th street.

Mayor Al Cathey said due to Hurricane Michael's devastation, they have no grocery stores or gas stations and many locals have relied on convenient stores and travel to other cities to get food supplies. He said they desperately need a grocery store in their community.

"We have other little businesses that are trying to fill that void with what I call snack food. We need a place in town where people can get meals, milk, bread and some of your basic items,” Mayor Al Cathey said.

Some locals say the builder is hoping to have the grocery store built in six to eight weeks.

The grocery store will go into the location of a real estate office that has now moved. Wright and Company Realty is now in Parker at 6300 E. Highway 98.
