Mission group from Mexico helps Lynn Haven United Methodist Church
A mission group from Durango, Mexico is proving not even borders can stop church members from giving back.
Lynn Haven United Methodist Church has traveled to Durango, Mexico to help a church there for the last decade, until Hurricane Michael hit.
"We've sent teams down there, working on their facilities, building the church, and also carrying out different ministries for them, and this year, because of Hurricane Michael, we decided that it wasn't the appropriate time for us to be sending teams out of the country, and so we said since it really is a true partnership, we invited some of their members to come here," said Pastor at Lynn Haven UMC Craig Carter.
This year, members of Nueva Vida Church, or New Life Church, came to Lynn Haven to give back to the place that has given them so much.
"First of all, we feel grateful, because it's an opportunity for us to return a lot of so many things that Lynn Haven have gave to our community in Durango, and of course, we are very excited at what's going on this week, and realize how can we come together to contribute to make better this community," said member of Nueva Vida Church Yuli Martinez in Spanish, as her husband, Jorge Martinez, also a member of Nueva Vida Church, translated for her.
They will be working with the church's Vacation Bible School program starting Sunday night.
"We also realized that the Spanish speaking population in Bay County is increasing, and so we saw it as an opportunity that we could offer vacation bible school for Spanish speaking children, and that's going to be one of their primary roles is assisting in that and doing the translation, teaching the bible lessons in Spanish for them," said Carter.
Children will be learning worship songs in both Spanish and English.
The mission group says they were heartbroken to see the destruction of the main campus.
"It was very sad to get to see that, because we have been here before, and to us this is a special place because a lot of special people we love, they used to come here to praise God, but we know they're working really hard to get things better," said Yuli Martinez.
Lynn Haven UMC members say they're grateful for Nueva Vida Church.
"They've made some great sacrifices to be here, so it just means the world to us that they want to come and serve alongside us," said Carter.
New Life Church is bringing new life to Lynn Haven United Methodist.
Members from Nueva Vida Church will also be painting and fixing homes in the community throughout the week.
