More than 2,000 housing units to be built off Back Beach Road
On Tuesday, Bay County commissioners approved a proposed 948-acre planned unit development request from the St. Joe Company.
It will be located west of Chip Seal Parkway and north of Panama City Beach Parkway, extending all the way from Home Depot to the new sports complex.
St. Joe plans to build more than 1,700 single family units, 440 multi-family residential units and up to 750 hotel rooms, along with office and retail space.
Concerns were brought up about the impacts on traffic, flooding and over-commercialization in the area but commissioners say those issues are being addressed.
Commissioner Philip Griffitts said, "That piece of property is in the environmental management area which they self-imposed on themselves many years ago- stricter standards. So St. Joe is doing a very good service for their land as well as the citizens of Bay County. I know it is a concern for drainage, traffic and those things but those are all addressed in the development order stage so none of those burdens will be place on the other citizens."
While he couldn't give an exact start date, Griffitts says he believes it will be very soon.
