This week is National Safe Boating Week, and the U.S. Coast Guard wants safety to be a priority in the Panhandle.

Two girls were injured at Shell Island over the weekend by a boat propeller, and spatial awareness is just one aspect of boat safety. With more marine traffic comes more safety concerns.

"In high traffic environments, if you feel like you aren't in a safe situation, always come down to neutral and let the other boater make the decision," said Petty Officer Pitt Hughes of the US Coast Guard. "Wait for the proper time maneuver into a safer situation."

Memorial Day weekend is one of the most popular boating times of the year.
