WASHINGTON COUNTY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - Shopping for anything from jewelry to cars on websites like Craigslist has become very popular over the past several years.
That's why Washington County Sheriff Kevin Crews reserved two spots in the parking lot of the Washington County Sheriff's Office- to keep the seller and the buyer safe.
"The news is full of stories related to crime on face-to-face transactions and Internet transactions," Crews said.
The spaces are part of a Safe Exchange Zone, which is monitored by security cameras 24/7.
The Safe Exchange Zone can also be used for child custody exchanges. With some child custody cases, both parties are required to meet in a public place- and sometimes, that's the sheriff's department.
"We also wanted people to know that on the child custody exchange- they can utilize it for that also," Crews said.
The Washington County Sheriff's Office is registered on SafeDeal.zone. It's a website where people can put in their location and find the nearest safe exchange zone.
"If you're not from here and you key that information in on that website, it is going to show up as having a safe exchange zone," Crews said.
Crews said he's committed to protecting both Washington County residents- and those just passing through.
"While it is convenient, I don't think it's just about convenience," he said. "I think it's our duty to provide this for our citizens."
