OKALOOSA COUNTY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - Okaloosa County Sheriff's Deputies say a Fort Walton Beach man is facing charges after he was driving drunk.

Deputies say Andrew Garrett, 31, was seen driving 111 miles per hour in a 55 miles per hour zone on Okaloosa Island.

Deputies say they saw what appeared to be two cars racing on Highway 98 Wednesday night. They say both cars slowed down when the patrol car was close, but Garrett sped off when the deputy turned on his lights and sirens.

Deputies say Garrett was driving 90 miles per hour in a 35 miles per hour area in Destin. They say he turned onto Benning Drive, then Mountain Drive, through the grass, then hit a fire hydrant before heading back onto Mountain Drive. He was forced to stop due to damage to his car.

Deputies on scene say they could smell a strong odor of alcohol when they took him into custody. They say Garrett said all he did was "speed."

Garrett is charged with hit and run, racing on a roadway, reckless driving with property damage, DUI, fleeing and eluding, and driving with a suspended license habitual offender.
