OKALOOSA COUNTY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - Okaloosa County is honoring female veterans in a big way.
The county commission voted unanimously on Tuesday to create a monument honoring women veterans throughout history.
Florida is home to the second largest number of female veterans in the United States.
Around 50 people went to the meeting in support of the monument.
"I'm seeking recognition for the women who have served since the Revolutionary War and serve today. There are right now over 200,000 women on active duty. 36,000 of those women are officers, leaders, decision-makers. So why is there only one monument for historic women for every 13 plus for men?" said Christine Pratt, an Okaloosa County resident.
The commission is also looking to establish a committee to decide which veterans will be honored with a statue.
No word yet on when construction of the monument will begin.
