WALTON COUNTY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - The Walton County Sheriff's Office's Operation Blue Bird is back in action.
Deputies and undercover officers are patrolling school zones and bus stops, making sure people don't put kids in danger on the way to school.
"Especially in the rural areas and the areas that run through main thoroughfares, we're just asking people to really pay attention, slow down. Really get your head out of your smartphone apps and keep your eyes on the road," Corey Dobridnia with the Walton County Sheriff's Office said. "So we've put out FDOT signs pretty much at every school zone that is along a busy corridor. So it says 'first day of school is today, slow down.' We've got the flashing lights out, FHP is helping us, DeFuniak Springs Police Department is helping us."
Officials say they expect Operation Blue Bird to continue for at least the first few weeks of school.
"The main goal is to just keep our kids safe on the first day of school and beyond and to make this a really safe school year," Dobridnia said.
