Panama City man found guilty of murder in 2017 shooting death

BAY COUNTY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - A Panama City man has been found guilty of murder.

In 2017, Bay County Sheriff's Deputies responded to a shooting on 11th Court in Panama City. Deputies found Cody Darby, 29, dead in the bedroom of the home from a gunshot.

Jonathan Bennett was sitting in the driveway of the home and was arrested.

As the investigation continued, details emerged. Deputies said Bennett and Darby had been arguing and it escalated.

"I just shot him, he is in the back bedroom," Bennett said referring to Darby.

Bennett was charged with murder in the first degree with a firearm. Wednesday, a jury found him guilty.

Darby was described as a good ol' country boy at heart. He was an operator for SSA Marine and like to hunt and fish.

Bennett's sentencing is set for June 25th.
