PANAMA CITY BEACH, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - The growth in Panama City Beach is having a huge impact on the city's utilities so leaders are making way for a new sewer system.

Panama City Beach city council members have voted to buy more than 40 acres of land off Panama City Beach Parkway. City Manager Mario Gisbert said the city's current system is at full capacity and provides sewage services for the entire island. The new system would help keep things moving.

"It gives us the capability of probably doubling the size of the island over the 20, 30, 40, 50 years. This is a long-range plan for the city to expand that location," said Gisbert.

Gisbert said the new system will also allow the city to make improvements to the old one.
