Panama City to purchase 27 lots in Horizon Park for affordable housing complex

PANAMA CITY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - As we continue to recover from Hurricane Michael, Panama city officials want to make sure there's enough housing for the workforce.

Commissioners voted Tuesday to accept an offer for a parcel of land located near Horizon Lane just north of 11th Street.

The parcel contains 27 lots that are already platted and have roads and utility infrastructure installed. The goal is to develop housing similar to the homes already in place.

"This is going to be affordable housing. It's in the roughly the $100,000 to $110,000 range. People who qualify for that are generally first-year teachers, firefighters and police officers and nurses and those folks need an opportunity to have a home," City Manager Mark McQueen explained.

The Commission used money from the state to make the $236,000 purchase.
