Rabid fox killed in Jackson County

JACKSON COUNTY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) -- According to the Florida Department of Health in Jackson County, a fox has tested positive for rabies. Health officials say the animal attacked an individual recently on Hummingbird Road in Bascom and was then killed by the victim.

Anyone with knowledge of bites or knows of someone who may have been exposed to an animal suspected to have rabies should contact the Jackson County Health Department at (850) 482-9227 or (850) 526-2412 (after hours).

Officials say you should avoid contact with wild or unfamiliar domesticated animals to minimize your risk of exposure to rabies.

Health experts also want to remind Jackson County residents there are laws in Florida requiring vaccination of all dogs and cats.
