BAY COUNTY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - Reconstruction is about to begin for a handful of Bay District schools.
The item came up during an unusual Bay District School Board meeting. The power had to be turned off for maintenance, leaving board members to use cell phone lights to proceed with the meeting.
Bay High School, Rutherford High School, and Merritt Brown Middle School are on deck for reconstruction projects.
Lee Walters, the Director of Facilities for Bay District Schools, said work has already started at Rutherford including roofing.
Walters said repairs will cost $19 million for Merritt Brown, about $7 million for Rutherford, and close to $9 million for Bay.
Walters said there isn't a set end date for any of these projects as he believes workers may still find damage.
"We've tried to cover all of our bases on identifying the damage, but we still expect the scope to increase somewhat throughout the project," he said.
Culpepper Construction will take on Bay, Reliant South will handle Rutherford, and Lord & Son Construction will take on Merritt Brown.
These companies will get the green light to begin construction Wednesday.
