Vanessa Clark has been driving a school bus in Jackson County for 30 years.

She's the first and last person students see during their school day.

"The school bus, you know that kind of sets the tone for their school day, so I just hope I'm a good influence and a good bus driver for the children," Clark said.

Jackson County is in need of bus drivers for the new school year.

"This is a situation that's not unique to Jackson County. It's pretty much statewide and nationwide," Jackson County Superintendent of Schools Larry Moore said. "We're fortunate in Jackson County to have some very good, devoted bus drivers, but we are in need of additional drivers."

The school district needs at least seven more drivers.

"Parents, you know mothers who may have children in school, you're part-time so you're off when they're off," Clark said. "It's a good, well-rounded way to supplement your income."

The job comes with a salary and benefits, but not all rewards are tangible.

"I have kids come back that are grown already and I get to speak with them and see where they are in their lives," Clark said. "They have kids now and may even ride my bus now, so it's like a generation thing. It carries down."
