Search for woman who reportedly stole from 9/11 memorial

CRESTVIEW, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - Crestview police are searching for a woman they say stole an artifact from a 9/11 memorial display.

Police say surveillance video shows the theft, a woman, who appears to be with a young, possibly teenage couple, picking up a police cap from the display set up near the entrance of the Crestview Winn-Dixie.

Police say the woman put the police cap on her head sideways and walked away.

Stills from the surveillance footage show a white woman in her mid-30s to mid-40s with light brown hair.

In addition to the memorial to those who lost their lives in the 9/11 attacks, Winn-Dixie also put up the memorial to honor local police and firefighters. The display featured artifacts borrowed from local police and firefighters.

Police say the suspect stole a black ball cap with the word "POLICE" embroidered across the front.

“It’s really sad someone would do that at a memorial to brave first responders who gave their lives on that tragic day,” Officer Nicky Mojica, who is investigating the case, said. “How can somebody be so disrespectful?”

If anyone has information on this case, call the Crestview Police Department at 682-2055.
