PANAMA CITY BEACH, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - A kayak fishing guide had a close encounter with a hammerhead shark over the weekend.
Pony Donald of The Floating Fisherman took video of the shark that kept following him just offshore Panama City Beach on his way back from fishing.
Donald said the shark smelled the fish he had on board, and he had to hit the side of the kayak with a paddle to try and scare it away.
The shark didn't give up though.
"Once he noticed I was paddling he became more aggressive," Donald explained. "The splashing, the smell was hitting his triggers and he was coming in a little bit faster each time so he wouldn't get close enough to where I could touch him with the paddle. After a little while, he turned around and got close enough to where I able to hit him with the hammer and off he went."
Donald said seeing all sharks isn't unusual. He's even had tiger sharks approach him. However, the sharks will usually give up quicker when they realize humans aren't prey.
