Sheriff's office: Prisoners riot at Holmes Correctional Institution

Here's a statement from the Florida Department of Corrections about the incident Wednesday night at Holmes Correctional Institute, just south of Bonifay.

"Wednesday night, there was a major disturbance involving several hundred inmates housed in multiple dorms at Holmes Correctional Institution. At this time the situation has been resolved and the facility remains on a Level 3 lockdown. There was one inmate on inmate injury that occurred during the disturbance. No staff were injured. The Department is currently accessing the facility for any damages that have resulted and have transported all the involved inmates to other locations. Additional information will be made available following a comprehensive after action review and investigation.

A riot situation at the Holmes Correctional Institution that started Wednesday night is settling down.

According to the Holmes County Sheriff's Office, an undisclosed number of inmates barricaded themselves in at least four dorms. As of Thursday morning, at least three of the dorms are back in control of the prison officers.

Deputies are continuing to help with securing the institution, and some inmates are being transferred to other facilities.

No officers or inmates are believed to be seriously hurt at this time.

The action is believed to be part of a nationwide prisoner strike planned for Friday. We'll continue to follow this story and bring you updates as we learn more.
