BCSO: Man shot after threatening to hurt law enforcement

BAY COUNTY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - According to the Bay County Sheriff's Office, a man was shot after threatening law enforcement Sunday afternoon.

Sheriff's officials said they responded to the report of a stolen vehicle in the Callaway area.

They said the stolen vehicle, a Jeep Cherokee, was found at a mobile home park at 2300 Sherman Avenue in Panama City.

Deputies identified the suspect as Steven Russell, 37.

They said as they approached the home, Russell was overheard saying he had a gun and threatened to hurt law enforcement.

The Hostage Negotiation Team for the Bay County Sheriff's Office reportedly engaged the suspect in a negotiation for several hours within the home.

They said Russell threatened deputies with the gun and was shot.

He was reportedly taken to a local hospital.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement has been requested to investigate the incident..

The deputy involved has been placed on administrative leave, which is part of BCSO's policy.
