Superintendent gives update on Bay District Schools

BAY COUNTY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - We're learning more information about when Bay District Schools will open, as well as some of the plans for students sharing campuses.

Superintendent Bill Husfelt said schools will open no later than the week of November 12th.

He anticipates some schools may open before then.

Husfelt said Hurricane Michael has created millions of dollars in damage to the district.

For example, Bay High School will most likely need portables as the campus sustained significant damage.

Husfelt said the district ordered 120 pods.

"So Bay High for a few weeks will be sharing Jinks' campus, Everitt will be going to Rutherford and sharing their campus. We'll have some split sessions going on, a morning session and an afternoon session," Husfelt explained.

Merritt Brown Middle School will be going to Mosley High School.

Husfelt said these dual sessions will last for a few weeks.

The goal is to have most students return to their schools by the new year, with the exception of Tyndall, Oscar Patterson, and Springfield.

Administrators and year-round employees returned to work Monday, October 22nd. Teachers are scheduled to return Monday, October 29th, but can take leave if necessary.
