Suspect in Freeport war memorial vandalism identified

WALTON COUNTY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - The suspect in the recent vandalism of a Freeport war memorial has been identified.

Walton County Sheriff's officials say the 14-year-old suspect was caught during the investigation into a separate incident of criminal mischief.

They say the teen admitted to defacing the war memorial by ripping a bronze rifle replica from the statue at Freeport's city hall.

Authorities began investigating on January 21 after a man called the sheriff's office saying he found the rifle replica in a wooded area on his property.

Charges are pending in this case.
