BAY COUNTY, Fla. (WJHG) - Teachers dedicate their time giving back to students, and this week's Golden Apple winner is no stranger to giving back; he served in the military before becoming a teacher. Congratulations to Kiernan Sullivan of Callaway Elementary!
"For me, the thing that I thought about doing, was helping kids. It's really an awesome thing because we have more and more single-parent families and there's not a lot of male teachers in the district or in teaching at all, and I thought it would be a really great thing to get in and help kids and give back," Sullivan said.
After retiring from the military, becoming a teacher was an easy choice for Kiernan Sullivan.
He's been teaching in the district for 12 years.
"I think if you don't participate and be part of the community, and not give back, you can't really expect it to grow. So, the more you give the more you get out of it," Sullivan said.
His students are known as 'Sullivan Sharks,' and every day Sullivan works hard to make sure his students are engaged in the classroom.
"The best thing in the world is when a kid's been struggling a little bit and they give you that 'aha' moment where they get it, that's payday," Sullivan said.
This year has been a little challenging with the hurricane, but Sullivan says his kids have handled it well, and he's making sure they have the support they need.
"By the end of the year I want my kids to know that I've always got their back, that learning never stops and they are always going to pick up something new every day," Sullivan said.
