The Humane Society of Bay County has temporarily closed its doors this week, in part because of COVID-19.

Monday volunteers worked to clean up the building and organize items no longer in use.

Until this point, the organization said it has been operating the shelter on a day by day financial basis, but now can no longer afford to keep the doors open while the economy struggles.

There's no reopening date as of yet.

“I mean it’s going to depend a lot upon the community, the economy. It’s also going to depend upon what we have for funding to get open, just like really kind of any new business you got to get the funds there to make that step to get open,” said Mary Gauden, president of The Humane Society of Bay County.

All but five animals were adopted and those remaining animals went to a different rescue.

The Humane Society is however still taking donations. To do so, visit their website
