ALTHA, Fla (WJHG) - School is finally back in session after being closed due to Hurricane Michael and that means our Golden Apple award is back. Congratulations to Mrs. Jackie Humphreys of Altha Public School, this week's Golden Apple winner.
Jackie Humphreys has been teaching at Altha for 13 years. She teaches high school history, economics and government classes.
"First of all you got to get to know the kids, you really do and I'm very fortunate to be here in Altha this is an extended family for me," Humphreys said.
When Humphrey's came to Altha she didn't know anyone, but through teaching, she has gotten to know her students and their families.
"I know their moms, their dads, their aunts, their uncles, their grandparents, their siblings. I know their stories as we call them here, I know who they are, I know what they aspire to be and I try to help them get that goal," Humphreys said.
Altha is a strong community, but Humphreys says going through Hurricane Michael was tough, and being out of school for so long was hard for everyone.
"We've had quiet a bit of tragedy through this, some of our students have lost personal family members, some of them endured the hurricane and then ended up losing their homes to fires after it was over with," Humphreys said.
But getting back in the classroom is a sense of normalcy everyone needs. Humphreys is getting back to teaching and paving the path to a successful future for her students.
"It's truly quite heartening to realize the extent that my influence has had at times because you think it ends at the door and it just doesn't," Humphreys said.
