Turtle nesting season is right around the corner and with beaches closed officials are hoping for a good start to the season.

Officials with South Walton Turtle Watch say with fewer people on the beach there will be less trash as well as fewer holes and obstacles for hatchlings to navigate through.

They also say any tire treads from beach patrols shouldn’t cause too much of a problem for any hatchlings.

Lacie Wegner with South Walton Turtle Watch said, “You know sometimes the hatchlings can get stuck in those tire ruts, but there really should be less of that right now. It really shouldn’t be any different than any other season.”

Officials say the group is considered an essential service and are permitted through the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

Nesting season starts May 1.
