DEFUNIAK SPRINGS, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - Two men are facing charges after a dog was shot multiple times Thursday, deputies say. The dog was humanely euthanized.
Walton County Sheriff's Deputies responded to a home on Roman Road in DeFuniak Springs Thursday night. They say the call heard gunshots and the sound of an injured dog. Deputies say when they got on scene they talked to Billy Spires, 42, who said his dog killed a cat and he called his neighbor, Richard Wilson, 64, asking for a gun. They say Spires took the handgun and shot the dog.
Deputies say the dog was still in the backyard, alive, and suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
They say both men are convicted felons.
Spires is charged with animal cruelty and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Wilson is charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
Deputies say the dog, a female, white American bulldog named Lizzy, was taken to the Walton County Animal Shelter by Animal Control Officers. Based on her injuries, staff decided it was in the dog's best interest to be humanely euthanized.
