Tyndall Elementary expanding to K-8 school

BAY COUNTY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - Tyndall Elementary School may soon be no more, but it's not closing down.

At Tuesday's School Board meeting, the members decided it was time to expand Tyndall Elementary School to a K-8 school.

They'll start by moving the fifth graders this year to sixth grade next year and then to seventh grade the next year, and on to eighth grade the year after that, so it will be a gradual year-by-year process to become a full middle school.

Superintendent Bill Husfelt said this is directly tied to the recent announcement that the base will be receiving funding to rebuild.

"We know for sure more people are moving back to Tyndall Air Force Base and more people are going to be employed there, we know that's for sure happening, so we're putting our focus there because we know for sure that growth is going to happen over the next few years," said Husfelt.

They're looking at changing the name to Tyndall Academy, but it must be approved by the Florida Department of Education first.
