JACKSON COUNTY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - U.S. Senator Bill Nelson spoke to Jackson County officials about the possibility of bringing the Amtrak train service back to northwest Florida on Tuesday.
He says the first step was to convince Amtrak to restore service from New Orleans to Jacksonville.
That was successful, but it's been a slow process trying to get CSX to make an agreement with Amtrak.
CSX owns the railroad tracks.
Senator Nelson said there's still a mystique and romance with trains in our culture today.
"It's not all with airplanes now or the car being so important to the American public," Senator Nelson said. "Trains are a big part of that."
The Federal Surface Transportation Board will make the ultimate decision on bringing Amtrak back to northwest Florida.
