Walton commissioners look at new space for building, planning departments

FREEPORT, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - Getting land and development permits in Walton County could soon be a lot easier.

During Tuesday's Walton County Commission meeting, board members voted on a motion to consolidate the county's planning and building departments into one location in Freeport.

Currently the departments are split between the north and south end, making it inconvenient not only for county, but also for the residents.

"Right now we duplicate resources, we duplicate costs for each location, so if we can minimize those costs we feel like we can put that back into a better product for our citizens where," said Special Projects Manager, Rick Wilson. "We just feel like this is the best place moving forward at this time. It's not a permanent solution but it does get everyone under one roof and try to reach that goal of efficiency."

The 24 unit complex would be located at the intersection of Highway 331 and Highway 20.

Now that the request was approved, the next step will be to get an appraisal of the property and title acquisition.
