A Calhoun County Sheriff's deputy responded to Lamont Road northeast of Fountain after learning a dog bit a 76-year-old woman.
Reports indicated EMS was already trying to stabilize the woman, later identified as Alicia Malagon, when the deputy arrived on scene.
Malagon was found unresponsive in a large pool of blood in a home.
She had apparently agreed to watch her daughter and son-in-law's house and their animals like she had in the past.
Malagon brought her own small Dachshund with her when one of the other dogs, a Pit bull, started attacking the Dachshund.
Malagon tried to separate the two when the Pit bull began attacking her. The dog bit her in several places with a big gash in her right leg. The Dachshund was also seriously hurt.
She tried to call her daughter and son-in-law for help, but they were heading out of town.
Another family member found Malagon on the kitchen floor, and called for help.
First responders took her to Calhoun-Liberty Hospital where she was later pronounced dead.
The Pit bull is in quarantine at the Sheriff's Office.
