JACKSON COUNTY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - Progress is being made on the new Marianna K-8 School.

School district officials say they have reached a guaranteed maximum price of just over $57 million.

The school will cover about eight acres and will serve around 2,000 students.

With school safety on everyone's minds, district officials say the new facility will probably be the most secure school in the district.

"With the Governor's new policy about hardening schools, we're going to try to meet that," Facilities Director Stuart Wiggins said. "He hasn't come out with his plan yet, but we're hoping to meet that with this school."

Officials say they'll probably start clearing the area within two to three weeks.

Construction on the new school is expected to be finished by May 2020. The first students will start class in August.
