PANAMA CITY BEACH, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) Arnold girls weightlifting coach Donka Flaig received a nice honor from coaches across the entire state Tuesday—one she almost threw away.

Arnold weightlifting coach Donka Flaig gets named Coach of the Year

Flaig was informed by mail that she was chosen as the 2018-2019 National Federation of State High Schools Girls Weightlifting Coach of the Year.

Flaig runs the Arnold program along with her husband Josh, guiding the Marlin girls to a team state championship in their own gym along with individual titles for Sana Habib and Emily Bennett. The honor is bestowed in part for success, and to a coach who has helped shape their athletes physically and emotionally while contributing in a positive way to the community.

"I had no idea that they were even considering it," Flaig said. "I got an envelope today and it said, 'congratulations!' I told Josh, 'keep it on the down-low, I don't want anyone to know.' But soon enough my A.D. [Rick Green] calls me up and says 'hey, that's a huge thing! You're talking to the media today.' I'm like, 'no sir!' And I've known Coach Green for years and I've never told that man no but I said 'no sir' three times until he said, 'excuse me!"

Flaig admits it is an honor to receive this recognition and she's proud of how far the program has com since she began her tenure six years ago.

The Marlin success continued Tuesday night, winning the Bay County Championship as a team with Emily Oliver, Sana Habib, Emily Bennett, and Amerie Daniels earning individual crowns.

AHS hosts the state meet again in February.
