MARIANNA, Fla (WJHG/WECP) - Chipola baseball's Jeff Johnson is already working to restock the shelf, in terms of talent, after his team just won its second straight national championship.
And this is a win-win on both a baseball and local level for coach Johnson.
Earlier Monday, Marianna senior Cameron Gray, who was originally committed to the University of South Florida, signed on with coach Johnson and Chipola.
Gray is a 6'2", 180 pound lefty power pitcher, who was 6-1 this past season for coach Hughes and the Marianna Bulldogs, with a 1.21 earned run average and 101 strikeouts in 69 innings pitched.
Perhaps a surprise that Gray's name was not called in the 40 rounds of the MLB draft last week.
By going to Juco ball, he will be eligible to be drafted the next two years. If he went to USF, it would be a minimum three year wait to be draft eligible again.
Good to see the local talent stay close to home, be interesting to watch him develop the next year or two.
