NICEVILLE, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - Call it a showdown of two of the best Juco basketball teams in the nation.
Chipola travels to Niceville Saturday with first place in the Conference race on the line.
No doubt about it, by anyone's standards, we are talking about two of the best women's teams in the nation.
The Lady Raiders are ranked first in the national poll with a perfect 16-0 record and two wins in Conference play, the second of those league wins coming Wednesday at Gulf Coast.
Coach Walker calls it a big win, but in this league, even with a win like that, you don't celebrate for more than a few minutes.
"We try to instill that into them that every game is gonna be a dogfight in this league," Walker said. "It's gonna be a back and forth game. You have to move forward after that game. We celebrated for about thirty minutes and we started moving forward. So we've got to get ready for the Indians."
As for the Indians, the number ten team in the national poll, they head west Saturday with a 16-1 overall record and that includes a win in their league opener Wednesday against Tallahassee.
"We don't celebrate." says Chipola head coach Greg Franklin. "Our goal is, we have three seasons here. You have the Conference and the non-Conference. And then you have the State and National Tournaments. And those are three different seasons. So we're embarking on the first part of this second season. Never want to be settled. Want to enjoy the moment and then hey it's over, let's move on and concentrate on Northwest Florida at Northwest Florida."
As for the match up, coach Franklin says it's going to be a battle of different styles.
"They're a very good team, I thought my team mirrored Tallahassee's pretty good, we both a very athletic style of basketball. I think that if we're gonna go over and steal one we have to speed them up a little bit. We have to get up under their wheels, make them play fast against us. It will be a test of two different styles, hopefully our style is strong enough to take that one over."
The ladies tip at 5:30, the men at 7:30.
