Chipola celebrates alumni weekend with 4-2 win

There was a lot to celebrate Saturday afternoon in Marianna.

Chipola baseball is ranked number one in the preseason poll, the weather was beautiful for the season openers, and the many of the 2017 national championship team was back in town to receive the rings and cheer on the 2018 Indians team.

Before alumni weekend festivities, the Indians battled back from a 2-0 deficit against Wallace Community College from Dothan. Francisco Urbaez, Max Guzman, and Alex Webb smacked solo home runs in the seventh inning.

Three solo home runs in four at bats, plus another in the eighth inning, propelled Chipola to an opening weekend sweep.

After the game, the focus shifted from this season to some of the great Chipola teams from the past.

The 2017 players saw their championship rings Friday night at a banquet, receiving the rings on Saturday.

The success of last year's team, and decades worth of baseball excellence at this school is something alumni take great pride in.

"It's great. I get to see a lot of familiar faces, keep up with all the great people that I met when I was coming to school here," six-time MLB All Star Jose Bautista said. "It's just a joy to see everybody once a year and just kind of keep up. It's becoming a pretty cool tradition. We're a very close knit group and we hope to keep it that way."

"It's great to be back," 2017 Tigers' draft pick Reynaldo Rivera said. "I was looking forward to it since we won the national championship. These guys are my brothers and I wouldn't trade them for anything. Best experience of my life."

Alumni weekend also featured a home run derby and an alumni softball game.

Chipola continues the season at home Thursday through Sunday next week.
