Chipola hires Donnie Tyndall as next men's basketball head coach
The Chipola men's basketball program has a new head coach! Chipola A.D. Jeff Johnson confirming to me Tuesday night the school's hired Donnie Tyndall as the Indians next head coach. That after the new hire was approved by the school's Board of Trustees at a Tuesday night meeting.
Tyndall is a coach with some history. A graduate of Morehead State in Kentucky, he coached Juco ball in that state, Then took assistant coaching jobs at LSU, Idaho, and under former Chipola head coach Kermit Davis at Middle Tennessee.
Tyndall eventually got the head coaching job at his alma mater, did well there and in 2012 was named head coach at Southern Miss.
His teams went 56-16 in two seasons there, and he that success propelled him to the head coaching job at Tennessee. However NCAA sanctions hit Southern Miss in the wake of academic fraud under Tyndall's watch. So in 2015, Tennessee fired the coach because of that.
In 2016, Coach Tyndall hit with a "show cause" penalty by the NCAA, which means any school hiring him must show cause why it too shouldn't be sanctioned for doing so.
However Juco programs are not bound by the "show cause" and A.D. Jeff Johnson, along with others at Chipola, feel coach
Tyndall deserves a shot at redemption on the Juco level!
Johnson telling me Tuesday night "we're proud to hire a guy with Donnie's resume, and feel very fortunate a Juco program can get a guy like this who's won at every level he's been at. And we're anxious to get him down here and get him started in putting his team together."
Coach Johnson says a formal introduction of the new coach will come at the school Thursday afternoon.
