Gulf Coast MBB coach recovering from heart attack, will miss some time
Gulf Coast men's basketball head coach Phil Gaffney is recovering from a heart attack he suffered Saturday not long after Saturday's big comeback win over Tallahassee!
The coach went into the hospital Saturday night, and told us Wednesday afternoon he is recovering, and hopes to be out of the hospital by late Wednesday.
The school's Athletic Director Mike Kandler put out a short release midday Wednesday, stating coach Gaffney "will not coach tonight’s game vs. PSC because of medical reasons. At this time, there is no exact date for his return. We will post further updates as information is provided."
I reached out to the coach via text, and early Wednesday afternoon he texted me back confirming the heart attack right after Saturday's game. And added his hopes for leaving the hospital later Wednesday.
The team plays at Pensacola Wednesday night, with 5th year G.C. assistant coach Scott Jackson leading the team from the bench.
Under the guidance of the first year head coach, the Commodores are 16-4 and 3-1 in Panhandle Conference play. That has them tied for first going into Wednesday night's game against the Pirates.
