Gulf Coast men's hoops team into holiday break

The Commodores are off to a good start and looking to build on the early momentum

PANAMA CITY, FL (WJHG/WECP) Among the area basketball teams now enjoying a bit of a holiday break, the Gulf Coast men's team. First year coach Phil Gaffney able to give his guys about a ten day break from the grind of every day practice and games. The team with a 13-3 mark after its first 16 games, beating three nationally ranked teams along the way. They're coming off two games in Gainesville, losses Saturday and Sunday, after which the coach sent the players home for the break, they'll reassemble the day after Christmas.

"Great time for us to get away, we have four or five guys with nagging injuries." coach Gaffney told me Tuesday. "Our starting big man hasn't played this year, 6-11 Dion Butler from Illinois, so hopefully he'll be healed, he'll be back and ready to go. And those four or five guys who have been hampered with injuries will be ready to go. So the break came at a great time mentally and physically, we were all ready for it."

The Commodores will host the Visit Panama City Beach Classic on the 30th and 31st, then prepare for the start of conference play January 4th.
