PANAMA CITY, FL (WJHG/WECP) The Gulf Coast women's basketball team continues with an undefeated record, and that now includes one win in Panhandle Conference play.
Gulf Coast set to end long break between games with trip to Rome, Georgia
The Lady Commodores getting a 78-66 win Saturday at Northwest Florida, taking their overall record to 14-0, and 1-0 in league play. That as they head into game two of league play Wednesday against Pensacola.
"You know it's big, and to be able to go on the road against the number four team in the country. Gulf Coast head coach Roonie Scovel told us after practice Tuesday. "And they're so talented. It was a tough game, and really a great game. I thought it might be a little sloppier with it being the first Panhandle and nerves, and maybe not shoot well. And both teams performed well and we were kind of fortunate to come out on top in the first one."
And there's the added bonus of a confidence "shot in the arm" getting that opening win on the road.
"I think it builds confidence." says coach Scovel. "You say ok, here we are, we've been talking about since August, the Panhandle. I'm sure the players are tired of it. As a coach I'm kind of tired of talking about it. But here it is, there's 11 more games to go. We talked about it with our players, we're not gonna get crazy if we lose the first one. We're certainly not gonna get crazy if we win the first one. There's too much more play, great teams out there. Panhandle play is outstanding. But you know to be able to say you've got to get so many wins...and we got one."
Wednesday night, it's back into conference action, this time on the home floor against Pensacola, which will be making it's conference debut. The games at Gulf Coast 5:30 for the ladies, 7:30 for the men.
As for the Gulf Coast men, they too getting the win at Northwest Saturday, needing two overtimes to get a 85-82 win. Also a big boost for first year coach Phil Gaffney and his team heading into the second conference game Wednesday.
"It's great to get a 1-0 start," coach Gaffney told us Tuesday "we're tied for first place with Tallahassee and Tallahassee is off tomorrow (Wednesday) So we play Pensacola, we beat Pensacola, we're in first place by ourselves. That would be something very special, if we're in first place by ourselves. We're just trying to build on what we did. Had a great victory at Northwest, they don't usually lose there too often. Now getting that taste of knowing what it takes to win a Conference game, especially on the road, we'll enjoy coming back to play Pensacola tomorrow (Wednesday) night."
The Northwest teams meanwhile head east to Chipola, the Lady Indians coming off a win in Tally, the Chipola men opening with a loss. Those games also 5:30 and 7:30.
