Gulf Coast women's basketball is one week out from first game

PANAMA CITY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - The Juco hoops season is just over a week away!

For the Gulf Coast women's team, the defending conference, state and national champions, the first regular season game comes next Friday.

Last year they won all those titles with a freshman laden squad, though they did lose two All Americans, both post players in Audrey Ann Goodreau and player of the year Kristina King.

So 9 players returning, but two of them are already out. Chipley alum sophomore Amanda Paschal's out for the year with leg injury. Another sophomore Raven Fox is out indefinitely with an unspecified injury.

"We had to get over it emotionally," Scovel said. "We had to get over the fact that when you take a couple (injuries) everybody gets a little bit nervous, am I next. So we play scared, play nervous and hesitant. And do things in drills, and don't play with any confidence. And we kind of had to get over that, even as a coach I had to get over that. And still you get concerned when you watch one go down, is it another one. Because we're two down at this point and we're just trying to stay healthy. And they were both freaky accidents and that's part of the game and unfortunately we took the snake bite this time."

Commodores open on the road with two games in Tennessee next Friday and Saturday. Play their home opener November 11th.
