The Gulf Coast women's basketball team finds itself in familiar territory after the first month of this season. The defending champs

are unbeaten and you could say it's business as usual for Roonie Scovel and her Lady Commodores. They are ranked number one in the state rankings, and number one nationally!

Having won 6 national titles, and three of the last four, well it's something coach Scovel's used to!

"We like the ranking, use it for bragging rights, but that's about all you use it for, the moment." coach Scovel tells us. "It's way too early. So it's just more of a compliment to your program at this point. So we're gonna try, you just say we need to stay on top, can we win the next game. So for us it's always about win the next game.

Gulf Coast working through a 17 day break between games. Unusual at this point of the season, but just something they've had to deal with. Part of the layoff, an intrasquad game that coach Scovel says was pretty intense and came down to the last few possessions.

"Well it's not ideal" says Scovel "but we've already gone on some long trips so you know budget-wise, we just couldn't schedule any more long trips. And it's hard to get games close by. Our practices have been tremendous so I don't know it's not something that I wouldn't do again with the intrasquad game going in the future. It's the first time we've done this. But you know last year gave us a lot of experience with a lot of rest when we had the storm and we were away from each other for two weeks and we didn't get to practice in here for a month. So we kind of learned that you just roll with the punches and make the most of whatever you have."

As they prepare to get back on the court and play for real, up in Rome, Georgia Friday against Walters State and Saturday against Georgia Highlands, the coach says she likes where her team is!

"Emotionally we're in a good place. When seem to, when you always start buying into the process. Coming in you're the best team on your team in high school, or wherever you came from. And now all of a sudden you're one of the better players, and there's a lot of good players. So at this point, during this layoff is kind of where we're starting to buy into the process. We're working hard. We've had some great practices. So I hope that translates into some great wins, or some great basketball this coming weekend."

The team will celebrate with a Thanksgiving dinner together this week before hitting the road.
