LYNN HAVEN, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - If you're looking for a good way to stay out of some potentially rainy weather in the coming days and nights, think about taking in some high school basketball action. Multiple area teams are hosting holiday tournaments starting Thursday, including Grand Ridge, Arnold and Mosley.
Michael Memmen the host for the latter at Mosley's Redfern Gym.
"It gives our community a good chance to come together." the Dolphins boys head coach said. "Bay County's had a lot of good basketball over Christmas. Then when the hurricane hit, it was like, 'do we scrap the tournament or do we push through?' Luckily we had a rubber floor here and were able to play our games."
Despite the storm damage, teams from all over have still shown great interest in making the trip.
"Teams still want to come, even the local teams that weren't hit as hard, so it's a good chance to bring the community together."
These kinds of tournaments, played while school is out, can be advantageous for the players as well.
"I tell my kids, this is the best time of the year because you've got nothing to focus on but basketball. Usually they try to focus, probably on girls and video games as well. It gives us a chance to get to a sense of self. We can practice for a little bit longer. You're a little bit more focused. You want to play good teams over the break to find out how good you are, and where you think you can be in February. It gives us a good chance to do that, especially with a good Bradford team coming in tomorrow."
Joining Mosley for two days of basketball at Redfern will be Wewa, Vernon, Chipley, Rutherford, and out of town teams from Starke and Selma, Alabama plus Vancleave, Mississippi.
The latter plays Vernon at 3 Thursday, with Wewa vs. Chipley on tap for 4:30, Rutherford vs. Selma at 6 and Mosley vs. Bradford at 7:30.
Over at Arnold, the annual Marlin Christmas Classic tips off with four games Thursday and runs through a title game Saturday. The Thursday games are Bay vs. James Madison (VA) at 10:15, Leeds (AL) faces Episcopal of Jacksonville at 1:15. Pleasant Grove (AL) takes on Bartram Trail at 3:00 and the Marlins take on North Paulding (GA) at 6.
