Mosley alum JJ Bleday tabbed as 4th overall pick by the Marlins

NASHVILLE, TN (WJHG/WECP) Mosley alum JJ Bleday did not have to wait long Monday night to hear his name called in the 2019 MLB draft!

Bleday, who played his last two years of high school at Mosley in 2015 and 16, then became a star outfielder at Vanderbilt University, was expected to be a top ten pick in the draft, and that was an accurate assesment. Bleday drafted number four overall, the first round pick of the Miami Marlins. That means he'll likely get more than $6 million as his signing bonus, if he chooses to sign. And that's expected.H

JJ's been solid all three years in college ball but has really blossomed this season into one of the best hitters in college baseball with 26 home runs, 68 RBI and a .353 average for the Commodores, who host Duke this weekend in a super regional.

Bleday choosing to wait until Tuesday to talk to us, but his two coaches at Mosley both weighed in via text Monday night. Todd Harless who coached JJ his junior season says "J.J. Bleday is a special human being, he puts everyone around him first and is very humble. He truly always talks about his team success when we have conversations, even this morning all he talked about was the upcoming super regional, says a lot about his character. All recognition he’s had from this season and tonight is well deserved."

Coach Harless goes on to say "Having a guy drafted this high is special for Bay County, he helps continue to promote the high level of play here in our area. It was shown again this year with several teams making deep runs in the playoffs and a few making the final four. It reminds colleges from all levels they need to come recruit players from our area and that opens many opportunities for current and future players.

Jon Hudson who coached JJ his senior season texted me "Mosley baseball is excited to hear JJ's name called 4th overall today. As the highest draft pick in Bay County history, we are proud to call him one of our own. JJ has special talent, and his work ethic, personal standards, and character are what seperates him. It's a great day to be a dolphin!"
